What Mem does better

Native apps. Mem runs as a Mac app, a Windows app, an iPhone app and on the web, works offline, and syncs across all of them.

It surfaces things as you write. Heads Up watches the note you are creating or opening and automatically shows related notes in a sidebar — including a timeline of past meeting notes for the person or the recurring meeting you are writing about.

It is wired into your working day. Mem Agent tracks open tasks and projects across your notes. Connections link it to Gmail, Slack or Todoist; you can message it through WhatsApp or by email; and on the Pro plans, custom routines prepare briefings, do research and send reminders on a schedule. A hosted MCP server lets Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code, Codex CLI and Gemini CLI read and write your Mem notes.

Meetings and sharing. In the Mac and Windows apps, Voice Mode records a meeting from your microphone and your computer’s audio and turns it into notes (in English). Notes are private by default, and you can share one to edit it together in real time, or share a whole collection.

What Memento does differently

Edits you approve before they land

Mem Chat creates and updates notes directly; afterwards, you can see what changed in the note’s version history, as a diff. Memento draws the line before the change. Edits that only add — filing a capture, linking pages, appending a sourced claim — go straight in. Anything that could lose or distort what you already trust — rewriting a confirmed fact, merging pages, resolving a conflict between sources — waits in your inbox as a diff until you approve it. Every fact has a status and a source

Memento’s agent marks each fact confirmed, inferred or disputed. Something it deduced stays “inferred” until you confirm it, and when two sources disagree, the page says so instead of picking one. Every capture is kept, unchanged, as a read-only source page, and the facts cite it — so you can check where a claim came from, not just what the AI thinks.

A wiki of pages, not a stream of notes

Mem organises notes into collections, and a note can sit in several at once. Memento’s agent writes a library of typed pages — people, projects, decisions, meetings — linked to each other, and keeps updating those pages as new captures arrive. Your capture is the evidence; the page is what you know.

Your model account, not a message allowance

Mem’s plans are monthly allowances: 25 messages to Mem and 25 new notes a month on Free, 50 of each on Plus ($9 a month), 100 on Pro ($29 a month), with larger Pro tiers up to $199. Memento runs on the Claude, OpenAI or other model account you already pay for, so the tokens are billed by your provider. Asking questions never counts on any plan, and capturing is free; what counts is agent work, like filing a capture — 20 runs a day on the free plan, 200 on Pro at €10 a month. See Plans & limits.

Android, and more than text

Mem says it is not yet available on Android. Memento installs as an app on Android and iPhone alike, with share-sheet capture. And where Mem imports Markdown and plain-text files, Memento also reads PDFs, Word, PowerPoint and Excel files, web pages and CSV.

Files you can leave with

Mem exports your notes and collections as Markdown, in one click — that is to its credit. Memento goes one step further, because the Markdown is the storage: the library is a Git repository, and the export is the pages, your original files and the full history of every change.

Pick Mem instead if …

… you want an assistant that works across your calendar, email and Slack and keeps track of your tasks, native desktop apps that record meetings, or notes you edit with colleagues in real time. Memento is narrower on purpose: one person’s library, and an agent that shows its sources and asks before it rewrites what you trust. It is also slower — filing a capture typically takes around eight minutes of agent work.

Moving from Mem

Export your notes from Mem as Markdown, then drop the files into Memento’s bulk import, which files the whole set in one pass without stopping to ask questions. Each Mem note is kept as a source, and what it says is filed onto the pages it belongs to.
